A new player in the legal tech arena is making waves with a substantial $10.5 million seed funding round, led by the influential venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. The Stockholm-based startup, Stilta, aims to overhaul the cumbersome workflows associated with patent litigation by deploying sophisticated AI agents trained to handle invalidity and infringement analyses. Just five months after its inception in December 2025, Stilta is already drawing attention for its innovative approach to a field that has seen little change over the past decades.

The funding round also included participation from renowned startup accelerator Y Combinator, along with investments from founders and operators associated with various AI entities such as Sana and OpenAI. This initial funding marks a significant milestone for Stilta, co-founded by four former McKinsey engineers. David Haber, a general partner at Andreessen Horowitz and known for supporting other legal tech ventures, led this investment, underscoring the growing interest in AI solutions for legal professionals.

Stilta's emergence coincides with a surge in investment in AI-driven patent technologies. Recently, Patlytics, another AI platform for patent management, secured $40 million in a Series B funding round, bringing its total funding to approximately $65 million. Similarly, Solve Intelligence, focused on patent prosecution, raised $40 million for its own Series B and launched a product aimed at workflows similar to those of Stilta. In this expanding market, Stilta distinguishes itself by concentrating on litigation rather than prosecution.

Innovative Features and Competitive Edge

During a recent demonstration, Stilta co-founder and CEO Oskar Block showcased the platform's capabilities, which allow users to input a patent number and initiate a comprehensive search for prior art. The system utilizes a vast database comprising 180 million patents, 250 million scientific publications, and over a trillion archived web pages, including resources from the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine. This extensive integration enhances the platform's ability to provide in-depth analyses quickly.

Block illustrated Stilta's effectiveness by conducting an invalidity analysis on a wireless networking patent. In about half an hour, the AI agents identified 868 relevant prior art references, categorizing them against the specific claims of the patent in a color-coded chart that highlights the strength of each reference. This level of analysis not only accelerates the process but also helps legal professionals grasp the nuances of each claim.

The platform allows for detailed exploration of each reference, enabling users to examine source texts and PDFs in relation to patent claim language. Additionally, Stilta's agents can operate simultaneously on the same patent, with one set focused on drafting invalidity theories, maximizing efficiency and productivity in legal workflows.

A New Era for Patent Litigation

Stilta’s ambitious goals stem from the belief that the labor-intensive processes of patent litigation can be significantly streamlined through automation. As Block stated, "Patent litigation runs on labor-intensive workflows that haven’t meaningfully changed in decades. Stilta automates them and, in doing so, becomes the system of record for how enterprises protect and monetize their most valuable intangible assets." This vision highlights the startup’s aim to become integral to the patent management ecosystem.

In terms of performance, Stilta claims its internal benchmarks indicate that its AI agents achieve approximately three times the recall of general-purpose models like ChatGPT when addressing invalidity tasks. This data suggests a promising future for Stilta, especially as patent litigation increasingly demands efficiency and accuracy.

As the legal tech landscape continues to evolve, Stilta's focus on automating patent litigation processes could set a new standard for other startups in the field. With backing from leading investors and a clear differentiation from existing tools, Stilta is well-positioned to make a significant impact in this niche market.
