On June 13, 2026, cyclists will gather at Divine Llama Vineyards in East Bend for the 12th annual Tour de Llama bike ride, an event organized by Samaritan Ministries. This fundraiser aims to raise $50,000 to support the organization's efforts to provide food, shelter, and hope to those experiencing homelessness in the Winston-Salem area.
This event holds great importance, especially during the summer when heat intensifies the challenges faced by vulnerable populations. Jan Kelly, executive director of Samaritan Ministries, emphasized the urgency of the situation: “While many people look forward to summer vacations and time with family, the hottest months of the year can be especially hard on our guests.” Rising temperatures lead to increased risks of dehydration and heat-related illnesses, making the work of organizations like Samaritan Ministries even more essential.
Cyclists in the Tour de Llama can select from three routes: 21, 38, or 60 miles, with all rides starting at 8:30 a.m. After the rides, participants and their families can enjoy activities at the vineyard, including food trucks, wine tastings, and interactions with llamas. This community-focused approach encourages physical activity and promotes generosity and support for those in need.
Registration for the event costs $45 per rider, and participants must be at least 18 years old. Pre-registration is required and must be completed by 2 p.m. on June 11, 2026. For every dollar raised during the event, 83 cents will directly fund guest services, maximizing donations for those who depend on the shelter and soup kitchen services offered year-round.
Founded in 1981, Samaritan Ministries has been a vital support system for the community, operating its Soup Kitchen and Shelter 365 days a year. With the shelter currently at full capacity, the demand for services remains high, particularly as more families with children seek assistance during the summer months.
