A new AI-driven collar has emerged, offering pet owners a unique way to communicate with their furry companions. Named Pettichat, this lightweight device translates barks and meows into coherent sentences that can be read on a smartphone. Weighing just 27 grams, it fits comfortably around a pet's neck while providing insights into their vocalizations.

Developed by a startup in Hangzhou, Pettichat uses advanced technology, integrating microphones and motion sensors to capture not only sounds but also the physical cues of pets. The collar interprets these vocalizations by matching them with a vast database of recordings, powered by Alibaba Cloud's Qwen AI model. Trained on millions of samples over several years, this system can discern messages such as "I'm hungry" or "I want to play."

The response to Pettichat has been enthusiastic. Pre-orders surpassed 10,000 shortly after they opened in mid-May, with the collar priced at approximately $120 or 799 yuan. Early adopters in China have already begun receiving their devices, with broader availability set for May 30.

Meng Xiaoyi, the founder behind Pettichat, claims that the device can detect over twenty different emotions with a reported accuracy rate of 94.6%. However, independent studies or external testing have yet to verify this assertion. Animal behavior experts warn that while vocalizations are important, the full context of pet communication also relies heavily on body language and environmental factors, which the collar may not fully capture.

Interestingly, the technology also functions in reverse. When pet owners speak into the app, their words can be converted into sounds that pets can understand, further bridging the communication gap.

While Pettichat appears to be winning over consumers and generating online buzz—bolstered by videos showcasing its translation capabilities—questions remain about the device's overall effectiveness in real-world scenarios. The interaction of various environmental factors and other animals could complicate the collar's interpretations.
