Kakao Partners with Google DeepMind to Enhance AI Transparency

Kakao is teaming up with Google DeepMind to implement SynthID, a watermarking technology, in its AI models, enhancing transparency and trust in AI-generated content.

Kakao is set to implement a new technology aimed at increasing the transparency of AI-generated content, addressing growing concerns about deepfakes and misinformation. This initiative is part of a partnership with Google DeepMind, introducing SynthID, a digital watermarking solution that embeds undetectable markers in various forms of content.

The agreement, announced on Tuesday, marks one of the first global adoptions of SynthID technology and positions Kakao as a leader among Asian companies. SynthID verifies whether content is AI-generated by invisibly embedding watermarks in images, text, audio, and video. This capability allows for tracing the content's origin without compromising its quality, a key feature in the fight against the spread of false information.

Kakao plans a phased rollout of SynthID beginning in the latter half of this year, starting with its image model, Kanana Collage, and video model, Kanana Kinema. The initial application will target the KakaoTalk Kanana Template feature, which creates short videos from images shared in chats. Previously, these videos displayed only a logo, but with SynthID, they can be accurately identified as AI-generated, even after editing or reprocessing.

Enhancing Trust and Compliance

This strategic move by Kakao also anticipates upcoming regulations, including the AI Basic Act, that will mandate the labeling of AI-generated content. By adopting invisible watermarking technology, Kakao aims to comply with legal standards while enhancing user trust in its platform.

Kim Kyung-hoon, Kakao's AI safety leader, emphasized the growing need for transparency in AI as the technology becomes more integrated into daily life. He stated, "As AI technology rapidly spreads into daily life, the importance of ensuring transparency and reliability for AI-generated content is also growing." He also highlighted Kakao's commitment to ongoing collaboration with Google in developing responsible AI practices.

Collaborative Efforts for a Transparent Future

Pushmeet Kohli, Vice President for Science and Strategic Initiatives at Google DeepMind, underscored the importance of partnerships in addressing the challenges posed by AI-generated content. Kohli remarked, "Effective collaboration is essential to identify AI-generated content. By expanding the application of SynthID technology to more platforms through partnerships with industry-leading companies, we are taking an important step toward building a more transparent digital ecosystem for everyone."

The collaboration between Kakao and Google DeepMind represents a significant move toward establishing a more accountable AI environment. As AI technologies continue to evolve, initiatives like SynthID are critical for fostering a safer and more transparent digital landscape. Kakao’s early adoption of this technology could set a precedent for other companies in the region and beyond, driving the conversation on responsible AI practices and addressing the urgent issues of misinformation and content authenticity.
