Anthropic has committed to paying SpaceX $1.25 billion each month until May 2029 as part of a compute deal aimed at strengthening its AI operations. This arrangement underscores Anthropic's rapid revenue growth and highlights the increasing demand for computational power in the AI sector. The total value of the contract is projected to reach $15 billion, representing a substantial financial boost for SpaceX, which has an annual revenue of about $18 billion.

The partnership was first announced last month, but financial details were revealed only after SpaceX’s recent filing for an initial public offering (IPO). The monthly payments will gradually increase, with reductions expected in May and June as the collaboration evolves. This strategic decision comes as Anthropic encounters challenges related to compute power, a key resource for developing advanced AI models.

Alongside this deal, Anthropic is expanding its operational capacity beyond SpaceX's existing Colossus 1 facility to a new site, Colossus 2. Tom Brown, co-founder and chief compute officer at Anthropic, noted on X, "We're expanding our partnership with SpaceX, and will be scaling up on (Nvidia) GB200 capacity in Colossus 2 throughout June." This expansion reflects the growing dependence on advanced computing resources to meet the demands of AI development.

SpaceX also indicated potential growth in its computing services, expressing a willingness to engage in additional contracts similar to the one established with Anthropic. In its IPO filing, the company expressed confidence in its ability to support its own AI models while meeting the obligations of current agreements. It stated, "We have sufficient capacity to provide compute for our own AI models, including support of our training and inference demands, and to satisfy the obligations under these agreements."

Despite the scale of the deal, both parties maintain flexibility, as either Anthropic or SpaceX can exit the agreement with a 90-day notice. This provision allows both companies to adapt to the rapidly changing demands of AI and compute requirements without long-term constraints.

As the AI sector continues to grow, the deal between Anthropic and SpaceX represents a strategic alignment aimed at addressing compute shortages while enhancing revenue streams. This collaboration could set a precedent for future partnerships within the industry, as demand for AI infrastructure rises. Looking forward, the implications of this deal may extend beyond immediate financial benefits, influencing how AI firms secure essential computational resources in an increasingly competitive market.
