Sarawak is making significant strides toward establishing its own sovereign Artificial Intelligence (AI) infrastructure, aiming to position itself as a digital economy hub in Southeast Asia. This ambitious plan was outlined by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during the recent DUN Sitting, reflecting a commitment to advancing the region's technological capabilities.
The aspiration for stable AI capabilities gained momentum during the Premier's recent visits to the United Kingdom and Ireland. The Sarawak delegation toured key facilities, including the K2 Strategic Data Centre in Dublin and the Isambard-AI supercomputer in Bristol, the UK's most powerful AI supercomputer. "This visit fortified our aspiration to develop sovereign AI computer infrastructure that can serve as the backbone of Sarawak’s digital future," Abang Johari stated.
Development of AI Data Campus
As part of this initiative, Sarawak plans to construct the Kuching AI Data Campus at Tanjung Embang. A 405-hectare site has been earmarked for this development, which will include dedicated power and water supplies to support essential data centre operations, AI computing, and digital connectivity nodes. This campus is expected to catalyze the state's future AI Grid ecosystem, promoting the integration of technology and infrastructure.
The Premier emphasized that by 2030, the proliferation of AI will enhance numerous job roles, improving productivity and expediting decision-making processes. This strategy highlights the need for increased investment in Sarawak’s digital ecosystem, which is essential to fully use AI.
Four Pillars of AI Advancement
Sarawak's approach to advancing its AI capabilities is built around four foundational pillars: infrastructure, technology, talent, and policy. The development of the Sarawak AI Blueprint and Roadmap aims to explore sovereign AI infrastructure, build a skilled workforce, and makes sure that the regulatory framework supports responsible innovation. The government is also looking into advanced innovations such as AI Grid networks and the integration of satellite-enabled capabilities, marking a strategic shift toward scalable digital ecosystems.
As Sarawak embarks on this journey, it positions itself not just as a participant in the digital revolution but as a potential leader in the AI space within the region. The successful execution of these plans could significantly alter the economic landscape, creating new industries and opportunities that use AI technology.
Looking Ahead
The Sarawak government’s commitment to establishing a sovereign AI infrastructure could lead to substantial advancements in both local and regional economic development. As the state prepares for the future, the implications of these developments will resonate across various sectors, potentially elevating Sarawak into a prominent technological hub in Southeast Asia. The ongoing work on the Sarawak AI Blueprint will be key in making sure that the region is ready to meet the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the AI domain.
