The drug discovery process is notorious for its high costs and lengthy timelines, often taking a decade and billions of dollars to identify a viable molecule. Many candidates still fail to progress despite these investments. While numerous AI startups have emerged with promises to alleviate some of these burdens, they have primarily catered to technically adept researchers. SandboxAQ asserts that the real challenge lies not in the models themselves, but in making them more accessible.
Founded around five years ago as a spinout from Alphabet, SandboxAQ has raised over $950 million from investors, with notable figures like Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, on its board. The company has diversified its offerings, which include a cybersecurity division, but its standout innovation is the creation of large quantitative models (LQMs). These models are distinctive because they are based on the laws of physics rather than relying solely on data patterns. They can perform quantum chemistry calculations and simulate molecular dynamics and microkinetics—critical processes that help scientists predict how molecules will behave in real-world applications.
According to a company statement, “Trained on real-world lab data and scientific equations, LQMs are AI models engineered for the quantitative economy, a $50+ trillion sector spanning biopharma, financial services, energy, and advanced materials.” This statement highlights SandboxAQ’s ambition; it is not merely developing another chatbot but is actively exploring the significant potential of AI across essential economic sectors.
In contrast to other well-funded initiatives like Chai Discovery and Isomorphic Labs, which focus on developing better scientific models, SandboxAQ emphasizes ease of use. Nadia Harhen, the general manager of AI simulation at SandboxAQ, underscored the importance of accessibility: “For the first time, we have a frontier [quantitative] model on a frontier LLM that someone can access in natural language.” Previously, users needed their own digital infrastructure to utilize SandboxAQ’s LQMs, creating an additional barrier to entry.
The typical clientele for SandboxAQ includes computational scientists, research scientists, and experimentalists, primarily within large pharmaceutical or industrial firms. These professionals often seek new materials that can be commercialized but have been frustrated with existing software solutions. Harhen noted, “Our customers come to us because they’ve tried all the other software out there, and the complexity of their problem is such that it didn’t work or didn’t yield positive results for them when that translation went to take place in the real world.”
