A 28-year-old man from Mount Vernon has been indicted for allegedly etching a swastika into an elevator at the Mount Vernon East Train Station, raising concerns over rising antisemitism in the region. Oscar Islas Sanchez faces a four-count indictment, which includes charges of criminal mischief as a hate crime, aggravated harassment, and making graffiti.
The incident took place on March 18, 2026, resulting in damages exceeding $1,500. Islas Sanchez reportedly used a knife to carve the offensive symbol into the glass of the elevator, prompting an investigation by the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) Police Department. After his arraignment by Judge Melissa A. Loehr, he was released on his own recognizance, as New York State's bail laws do not classify these offenses as qualifying for bail.
