Anthropic Targets $30 Billion Fundraising, Surpassing OpenAI’s Valuation

Anthropic is close to finalizing a $30 billion fundraising that could elevate its valuation to $900 billion, surpassing OpenAI's. Four major firms are leading the effort, which marks a significant acceleration in Anthropic's growth trajectory.

Anthropic is nearing the conclusion of a $30 billion fundraising round that would elevate the company’s valuation to an impressive $900 billion. If finalized as expected this month, this milestone would place Anthropic ahead of its competitor OpenAI, currently valued at $852 billion.

The fundraising effort will be led by four major firms: Dragoneer, Greenoaks, Sequoia Capital, and Altimeter Capital. Each investor is expected to contribute around $2 billion, according to sources familiar with the negotiations. This move comes just three months after Anthropic raised $30 billion at a valuation of $350 billion.

This latest funding push is characterized by a rapid pace, with investor outreach starting only last month. CFO Krishna Rao reportedly engaged in discussions with potential investors for just two weeks before this deal took shape. The urgency reflects Anthropic’s accelerated growth trajectory, with annualized revenue projections now exceeding $45 billion, a significant increase from last year’s $9 billion.

While Anthropic's revenue growth appears to surpass that of OpenAI, the two companies use different accounting frameworks, complicating direct comparisons. The success of Anthropic’s AI coding tools, particularly Claude Code, has been a key factor in its revenue growth, highlighting its competitive edge in the evolving AI sector.

Interestingly, three of the four lead investors have prior ties to OpenAI. Dragoneer invested nearly $3 billion in OpenAI last year, while Sequoia has been a backer since 2021. Altimeter's CEO, Brad Gerstner, has publicly endorsed OpenAI and hosted its CEO, Sam Altman, on his podcast. These connections underscore the complex relationships within the AI investment ecosystem.

Despite these substantial investments, major tech companies are not expected to participate in this current funding round. Anthropic has previously secured significant commitments from giants like Amazon and Google, with Amazon pledging up to $25 billion and Google up to $40 billion at a $350 billion valuation.

As Anthropic approaches this landmark fundraising, it finds itself at a critical juncture. Surpassing OpenAI in valuation could reshape competitive dynamics in the AI industry, setting a new benchmark for investment and growth in this space. If the terms of this round hold, it not only signals Anthropic's rapid rise but also reflects the growing demand among investors for AI-driven innovation and infrastructure.
