A striking generational split is emerging in South Korea's generative AI scene, as younger users show a clear preference for Claude and Gemini, while older professionals remain loyal to ChatGPT. This trend underscores how age influences technology adoption, with data revealing that user demographics are reshaping the competitive dynamics of AI platforms.

A recent survey by WiseApp·Retail·Goods shows that monthly active users (MAU) of generative AI services in South Korea reached record levels last month. The data indicates that ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, continues to lead with 23.45 million MAU, a 34% increase from 2022. However, competitors Claude and Gemini have experienced remarkable growth. Gemini surged to 8.45 million users, up 1,034% from 740,000 last April, while Claude increased its user base from 190,000 to 2.41 million, representing a staggering 1,168% rise.

WiseApp's analysis illustrates that distinct age groups are gravitating toward specific platforms. Users in their 40s make up the largest segment of ChatGPT's audience, comprising 22.1% of its user base, closely followed by those in their 20s at 21.9% and 30s at 21.5%. In contrast, younger users dominate the demographics for Gemini and Claude. Users in their 20s account for 23.9% of Gemini's audience and a striking 28.3% of Claude's, highlighting a strong preference among this age group for these newer entrants.

Gender differences also influence platform preferences. ChatGPT skews slightly female, with 52.1% of its users identifying as women, while Gemini and Claude attract more male users, with 52.3% and 62.1% respectively. Understanding these user demographics is key for companies looking to tailor their marketing strategies and product developments.

As the generative AI market in South Korea grows, it is becoming increasingly competitive. The overall market reached 291.8 billion won in Q1 of this year, reflecting a 141% growth from the previous year. While ChatGPT still commands a significant share of payment volume at 48.5%, Claude is quickly closing the gap at 31.7%, with Gemini trailing at 14.2%. This shift indicates a more fragmented market, moving away from an era of single-platform dominance.

An official from Epic AI, a platform that tracks AI investments, noted that the trend in South Korea has shifted from sporadic trials to sustained subscription spending. The top three AI services now enjoy a stable customer base, with many users maintaining subscriptions for six months or longer. This trend not only suggests longevity for these platforms but also points to a maturation of the generative AI market.

As younger users flock to Claude and Gemini, and older professionals continue to favour ChatGPT, the market is likely to see further shifts in user preferences and behaviours. Companies that can adapt to these changes and diversify their offerings may find themselves well-positioned in this fast-moving environment. The competition is intensifying, and as generational preferences solidify, the implications for each platform's growth trajectory will be significant.
