Google has unveiled a major evolution in its search capabilities, showcasing a reimagined search box during the Google I/O 2026 event. This new interface allows for smooth transitions between AI Overviews—AI-generated summaries presented at the top of search results—and AI Mode, the company’s chatbot-like experience. The updates are powered by the advanced Gemini 3.5 Flash model, which promises a more responsive and intuitive search experience.

The updated search box is now rolling out globally for both desktop and mobile users. It features an expanded interface that accommodates longer queries. A new AI-powered autocomplete function helps users formulate their questions, enhancing the overall search experience. Robby Stein, Google’s vice president of product for Search, noted that users will “reliably” encounter AI Overviews when they pose natural-language inquiries. This streamlined approach aims to reduce user friction, allowing for a more fluid interaction with the search engine. Liz Reid, another vice president at Google, commented, “We really work to make that much more seamless and simplified, so that for most users, they don’t have to think about where to go.”

In addition to the enhanced search interface, Google is moving towards a future where the platform proactively gathers information for users. This summer, AI agents will be rolled out for subscribers of Google AI Pro and AI Ultra, designed to monitor topics of interest even when users are offline. For instance, these agents can track updates on concert tours for users’ favorite bands and deliver notifications as new information arises. Stein highlighted the convenience this brings, saying, “You could be asleep, and it’s researching, finding information, doing tasks for you.”

The AI agents will also integrate with users’ other Google accounts through a feature called Personal Intelligence, enabling access to data from applications like Gmail to tailor responses further. Notifications generated by these agents will reflect the informative style of AI Mode, providing users with text, relevant links, and video content.

Google is expanding its AI-powered booking capabilities, allowing these agents to schedule local services and experiences on users’ behalf. This includes making phone calls to businesses such as pet groomers and beauty salons, enhancing user convenience.

Additionally, Google is introducing a new “generative UI” feature that enables users to create custom widgets and applications directly within the search engine. This feature will allow Google’s AI Overviews to generate interactive visualizations—such as diagrams explaining complex concepts—and incorporate them into search responses. Subscribers to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra will also be able to request the creation of “super apps,” tailored to their needs, like a home fitness tracker integrated with real-time data from various sources.

“This is really the next generation of what it means to be Search,” Stein stated, highlighting the significant potential of these advancements. As Google continues to refine its search capabilities, the company aims to make AI Search accessible and straightforward for all users, enabling them to ask a wide range of questions directly within the platform.

These changes have profound implications, as Google positions itself not just as a search engine but as an intelligent assistant capable of anticipating and fulfilling user needs. The ongoing enhancements to Search reflect a broader trend in the tech industry toward personalized, AI-driven experiences, marking a significant leap from traditional search methodologies. As the rollout progresses, users can expect a more interactive and user-friendly search environment, setting a new standard for how information is accessed and utilized.
